Transfer of BGS skills when missing an event?

This past summer event an elixir was used on me that transferred 3 points of my research ability to another player for the following BGS, but that player won’t be attending Fall and thus won’t be submitting this as a BGS.

Do I lose the 3 research, and they “miss” their chance to use it? Does the elixir end up doing nothing (I don’t lose since they don’t gain), Or do I lose it this BGS, but they gain it next available BGS to them? I’m assuming the last one?

The effect occurs on both characters at their next BGS cycle. That does not necessarily need to be the same BGS cycle.
